#MuslimLivesMatter and the Double Standards Within Mainstream Media
Curt Weldon had once stated “The mainstream media has its own agenda. They do not want to print the facts. They have an agenda, they have a slant, and they have a bias.” such is the current state of mainstream media at this very moment as three Muslims have been killed at the condominium complex at the University of North Carolina. Chapel Hill police have presented to the locals that 46 year old Craig Stephen Hicks has been arrested and charged with the killing of the three Muslims counting for first-degree murder. Though, where is the mainstream media?
Police had reported gunshots at about 5:15pm as three people were pronounced dead instantly. The deceased were identified as Deah Shaddy Barakat, Yusor Mohammad and Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha. Social media accounts belonging to the murderer prove that the actions and murder which had taken place is clearly a hate crime. Hicks had described himself as an “anti-theist”, an individual against all religions. Two of the deceased, Yusor and Deah had been married for less than two months and were also known to be a part of a charity campaign named Syrian Dental Relief. The campaign’s aim was to provide dental care to Syrian refugee students situated in Reyhanli, Turkey.
“I do find that the mainstream media oftentimes is what I would consider off base or has a bias.” states Dick Cheney. Such is the state at the moment as Islamophobic attacks are on the increase as three youth were murdered, though nothing was found in mainstream media sources. This negligence was criticized by Muslim’s world wide a #MuslimLivesMatter twitter hashtag was started by twitter users in competition to this negligence. Khalid Beydoun, law professor at Barry University in Florida had proclaimed “Muslims only news worth when behind a gun and not in front of it.”
Sana Saeed from Al-Jazeera had exclaimed on her social media website that its “Incredible that major news networks have yet to talk about the #ChapelHillShooting. Absolutely shameful. This is how Islamophobia operates.” Carlos Latuff from the Middle East Monitor had drawn a meaningful cartoon regarding the manslaughter of the three young adults in Chapel Hill with the mainstream media specifically “stepping over the news” regarding the deceased civilians and literally playing the “three blind monkey” game with the world audience.
Edward Said takes on this issue in his book “Covering Islam” quite bravely. Said describes that a “corps of experts on the Islamic world has grown to prominence, and during a crisis they are brought out to pontificate on formulaic ideas about Islam on news programs or talk shows.” He (Said) continues stating “Malicious generalizations about Islam have become the last acceptable form of denigration of foreign culture in the West; what is said about the Muslim mind, or character, or religion, or culture as a whole cannot now be said in mainstream discussion about Africans, Jews, other Orientals or Asians.”
The double standards within politics and mainstream media taking its toll. The world population will soon have trust issues between its viewers/readers and itself as important world issues are not being covered. This is known to be deliberate as if these issues are serviced, they will go against the motives and agenda or mainstream media cooperation’s. Such is seen with the politics of Fox and on the Twitter accounts of the BBC, and Fox News. A simple comparison between the Charlie Hebdo attack and Chapel Hill shooting shows the despicable agenda of these two media cooperation’s.
On the tweets of Fox News and the CNN network, the Charlie Hebdo attacks were marked to be “terrorist” attacks done by “terrorists” as Muslims are targeted here with word games. On the other hand, the Chapel Hill shooting was described to be done by a “man” and not a terrorist, as generally the white man is described to be a “lone wolf” and even a national hero. The deliberate and known double standards of the mainstream media can be seen here, as if a Middle Easterner commits a crime, he is immediately stamped as a “terrorist” whilst a white Anglo-Saxon person is described as a “man” within and “someone possessing a mental illness” within media headlines.
In conclusion, double standards should not be brought to the lives upon Muslims as Haya Barakat, the cousin of the deceased Deah Barakat had stated on her twitter account: My cousin, his wife and sister in law were murdered for being Muslim. Someone tell me racism/hate crimes exist. #MuslimLivesMatter.
